The most incredible thing you could ever hear on radio is somebody claiming that you, the host, are not some extraneous being who is only there to turn your interviewee inside out. Most journalists are supposedly neutral. Yet they approach their subjects critically, trying to pin them down and exposing them to their lies or conspiracies. That is considered the task of a journalist. He cannot get involved personally. It is too dangerous. So here I was interviewing an engineer from Belgium who specialised in control techniques. And he baffled me, telling me about the kind of knowledge he had developed. My body has a kind of steering system, he said — a system ensuring that I function perfectly; a system making sure that I am not some plant or animal but Willem de Ridder. It is a kind of computer or an instruction system. I did not understand a thing of it, and I said, "That is great! So you claim actually that you can give new instructions to this steering system and then my whole character will change—or at least have it remember its original state, before my parents began tinkering with it."

Jako rozhlasový redaktor je člověk zvyklý na ledasco a musí být na pozoru, aby byl nestranný. Často narazíte na podivíny, s nimiž se nesmíte zaplést. Následující případ se zpočátku jevil podobně, ale vyklubalo se z toho něco úplně jiného. Jednoho dne jsem v rádiu vedl rozhovor s belgickým inženýrem, který byl specialistou na techniky řízení. Během rozhovoru se nečekaně zmínil o jistých znalostech, k nimž prý dospěl. Řekl mi, že i moje tělo má řídící systém, který zajišťuje, že dokonale funguji tak jak jsem a že jen proto nejsem rostlina ani zvíře, ale Willem de Ridder. Prý je to něco jako počítač nebo příkazový systém. Nechápal jsem, co tím myslí a povídám: „No to je ohromné! Takže vy opravdu tvrdíte, že mi do takového systému někdo prostě může vložit nové instrukce, a následně se změní celá moje povaha – nebo si třeba začnu vzpomínat na stav předtím, než se do toho zamíchali mí rodiče.“

He said, "Guaranteed. You know, when your character changes, your whole system alarms you through symptoms we call diseases. And as your character returns to its original state, the diseases disappear, too." It made me smile. I did not believe it. And I thought, "I'll get you."
I had asthma since I was two years old. Asthma is pretty hefty stuff. If you get an attack, you breathe like a man hanging from the gallows. You can barely catch air. You cannot lie down. You cannot move. You sit, needing all your attention for breathing. It makes you extremely tired. You cannot think. There is only one thing on your mind: surviving. That's all. And though no doctor says he can do anything about it, this man claims he can make it disappear, just like that. He says, "Yes. Guaranteed." I say, "Okay. Let's try it. We are doing this radio program, and a lot of people are listening. Why don't you try me out? If I get cured, everybody will know and you'll get a lot of people interested."
It was the first time he'd ever talked about these things on radio, he said. And lo and behold, I got some little white pills. I took them, one a day, for 28 days. It is two years ago now, and I have not had a single attack. In fact, I run up the stairs and am faster on my bicycle than anybody else. And indeed, I must agree, my character has changed, too.
Two years later, of course, his telephone is ringing off the hook. And now I am curious to know how he developed this remarkable knowledge.  

Řekl: „Určitě. Víte, když se mění naše povaha, systém nás varuje prostřednictvím příznaků, jimž říkáme nemoci. A jakmile se vrátíte do požadovaného stavu, zmizí i nemoci.“ Musel jsem se nad tím pousmát. Nevěřil jsem mu a pomyslel si: „Však já tě dostanu.“ Měl jsem už od svých dvou let astma. Je to pěkně houževnatá věc. Při záchvatu dýcháte, jako kdybyste viseli na oprátce; stěží popadáte dech. Nemůžete ležet. Nemůžete se hýbat, a tak jen sedíte a veškerá vaše pozornost se upírá k dýchání. Je to velice vysilující. Nemůžete kloudně myslet a soustředíte se jen na jedno: na přežití. Nic víc. A ačkoliv vám žádný lékař neřekne, co s tím, ten muž mi tvrdil, že to může nechat prostě zmizet. „Zaručeně,“ povídal, a já na to: „Dobře. Zkusíme to. Jsme ve vysílání a poslouchá nás spousta lidí. Proč byste se mne z toho nepokusil dostat? Jestli se vám to podaří, zaujmete spoustu lidí.“ „To bylo poprvé, co jsem se o těchto věcech zmínil v rádiu,“ řekl. Pak mi poslal nějaké bílé prášky. Bral jsem je 28 dní, jeden denně. To bylo před dvěma lety, a od té doby jsem už nikdy žádný záchvat nedostal. Mohu vyběhnout do schodů a na kole jsem rychlejší, než jiní. A musím přiznat, že se změnila i má povaha. Po dvou letech jsem tomu muži zavolal. Byl jsem velmi zvědavý, jak dospěl ke svým pozoruhodným znalostem.

Because the man is not a doctor.
His name is Alfons Ven. He lives somewhere in the Belgian Ardennes, away from everybody, but right now he sits next to me.

Willem de Ridder: Alfons, welcome.
Alfons Ven: Good to be with you, Willem.

Willem: Since I told you about this incredible miracle, I discovered that many people have contacted you. All they really do is call you. You listen to them, you do not even have to look at them, and you send them these little white pills. That's all. Then things start to happen. How did you get involved in this, because originally you were an engineer?
Alfons: Yes. A control engineer. I was automating processes at refineries and all kinds of factories. I engineered control systems and I started them up. And one day, as I started one up, I was electrocuted.

Willem: Electrocuted?
Alfons: Electrocuted. Right. And it changed my life. I did not feel too much at all, so I thought it was not too bad. But 380 volts had crossed my heart and my brain. The following day, I began feeling kind of strange. I could not say exactly what I was feeling, but I felt strange. And the more this feeling progressed, the more I became estranged from myself. I became a stranger to myself. Engineers don't know anything about psychology or whatever, so I didn't know what was happening. I only knew that I was not functioning as I had.  

Není to lékař. Jmenuje se Alfons Ven, žije daleko od lidí v belgických Ardenách, ale právě teď sedí tady přede mnou.

Willem de Ridder: Alfonsi, vítejte.
Alfons Ven: Jsem rád, že jsem tu s vámi, Willeme.

Willem: Když jsem vás informoval o tom pro mne stále ještě neuvěřitelném zázraku, říkal jste, že vás kontaktuje mnoho lidí. Jediné, co musí udělat je zavolat. Vyslechnete je, dokonce je ani nemusíte vidět a pošlete jim tyhle bílé prášky. To je vše. Pak už se začnou dít věci. Jak jste k tomu dospěl, vždyť jste původně inženýr?
Alfons: Ano. Automatizoval jsem procesy v rafinériích a všemožných továrnách. Navrhoval jsem řídící systémy a uváděl je do chodu. A jednou, když jsem spouštěl jeden z nich, jsem dostal pořádnou elektrickou ránu.

Willem: Dostal jste úder elektřinou?
Alfons: Ano. A to rázem změnilo celý můj život. Vlastně jsem nic moc necítil a myslel si, že to není tak zlé. Ale mým srdcem a mozkem prolétl proud o napětí 380 voltů. Hned další den jsem se začal cítit prapodivně. Nedokážu popsat, jaké to bylo, ale cítil jsem se zvláštně. A jak ten pocit sílil, cítil jsem se stále odcizenějším. Stával jsem se sám pro sebe cizincem. Technici o psychologii a podobných věcech většinou nic neví, netušil jsem, co se děje. Jen mi bylo jasné, že nic není jako dřív.

 

To start up factories you must be in excellent condition. It is a heavy job. It is climbing towers, engineering, planning, ordering materials, installing, etc., etc. I began functioning worse and worse until I thought, "This has to stop." I didn't dare to climb any more, I didn't dare to drive a car any more. And I said, "This has to stop." I turned to a psychologist and then to a psychiatrist, and before I knew it I was in the hospital, where they gave me shots and I passed out.

Willem: So you worked in a factory. Someone turned on the main switch and you were electrocuted. You didn't die, you didn't have burns or...
Alfons: No, that was just it. As an electrical engineer I knew exactly what was going on. I had no burns so I said, "It's rather okay". But I started to feel strange.

Willem: Immediately?
Alfons: Yes. Pretty much so. Right after the incident I was dazzled. Then, in the first days, I took some aspirin and thought it would pass. Yet I felt worse and worse. I took some tranquillisers and hoped it would pass. Then I started taking drugs, and finally I found myself in the hands of a psychiatrist.

Willem: So you went to the psychiatrist and he gave you a shot.
Alfons: Yes, it was thirty years ago. And in Belgium, psychiatrists
were, let us say, neurologists. They were just treating clinically.  

Abyste uvedli do chodu nějaký provoz nebo továrnu, musíte být ve vynikající formě. Je to práce, při níž šplháte po věžích, projektujete, plánujete, objednáváte materiály, instalace, atd., atd. Dělalo mi to čím dál větší potíže, až jsem si pomyslel: „Musím s tím přestat.“ Už jsem se neodvažoval někam vylézt, a dokonce přestal řídit auto. Tak jsem si řekl, že s tím musím něco dělat. Obrátil jsem se na psychologa, pak na psychiatra a ani jsem se nenadál a byl jsem v nemocnici, kde mně dali pár injekcí – a byl jsem pryč.

Willem: Takže jste pracoval na nějakém zařízení, někdo omylem zapnul nějaký vypínač a dostal jste ránu. Nezemřel jste, neměl jste popáleniny nebo…
Alfons: Ne, prostě se to stalo. Jako elektroinženýr jsem přesně věděl, co se děje. Neměl jsem ale žádné popáleniny, a tak jsem si řekl, že to nic není. Ale začal jsem se cítit divně.

Willem: Hned potom?
Alfons: Ano. Už těsně potom jsem byl jako oslněný. Pár dnů jsem pak bral aspirin a myslel, že to přejde. Jenže jsem se cítil hůř a hůř. Začal jsem nějakými utišujícími prostředky a doufal, že to přejde. Pak jsem začal brát silnější drogy a nakonec skončil u psychiatra.

Willem: Takže jste šel k psychiatrovi, a ten vám pak dal první injekci?
Alfons: Ano, víte… bylo to před třiceti lety. V Belgii tehdy ještě nebyli psychiatři, řekněme spíš neurologové. Léčili jen klinicky.

Without further notice, I got injections and faded out. I fell asleep. But the mandid not examine me. I had probléme with my heartbeat. I did not knot that, either. But while I was asleep, those things became aggravated. And the doctor did not come to see me or ask, "How are you doing?" The minute I woke up a little bit, I got another injection. So I could not defend myself. I could not tell them, "I feel terrible and I'm going to die." I could not react. I was powerless. And the doctor did not come to my bed in eight days. So at the end of the week, I was really ready to die. And then, between shots, I gave my wife a sign to get me out of there. She was at my bedside and I said this was going completely wrong and she had to take me home. The doctor told her I couldn't be transported for even a mile.

Bez dalšího jsem dostal injekci a usnul. Ale ten chlap mne vůbec nevyšetřil. Měl jsem problémy s tepem, ale to jsem také nevěděl. A zatímco jsem spal, věci se zhoršovaly. A ten doktor se na mě nepřišel ani podívat, zeptat se jak se mi vede. Jakmile jsem jen trochu přišel k sobě, hned mi dali další injekci. Ani jsem se nemohl bránit. Nemohl jsem jim říct, že se cítím mizerně a nejspíš umřu. Nemohl jsem reagovat, byl jsem úplně bezmocný. Ten doktor za mnou nepřišel celých těch osm dní, co jsem tam ležel. Po týdnu už jsem skutečně byl připraven na smrt. A pak, mezi injekcemi se mi podařilo dát své ženě, která náhodou byla u mé postele, znamení, že jsem vzhůru. Řekl jsem jí, že všechno je úplně špatně, a že mne musí vzít domů. Doktor protestoval, že nejsem schopen přepravy ani na míli.
